From Teacher to Realtor: Why I Am Excited for this Adventure

For the past three decades I have had a wonderful and rewarding career in the nonprofit world of education. Over the past 14 years, I have been working at Tahoe Expedition Academy (TEA), an adventure-based learning school I co-designed and co-founded along with some amazing folks in 2011. Just recently, I was invited to a former student’s wedding, which brought the work full circle.

While I will continue to work with young people as a coach and volunteer, I am really excited to embark on a new adventure in my professional life. After this school year, I will be working full time as a realtor in Lake Tahoe, CA and Northern Nevada, a job I have been doing on the side for the past year (and an industry I have been following since I moved to Tahoe). This past February, in fact, I was very fortunate to complete the largest first deal in our brokerage’s 22 year history.

The first reason I am excited to venture full time into this line of work is our “location, location, location.” Without question, Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada are great places for families, visitors and adventure seekers alike. Lake Tahoe is known around the world as a destination, and it is not a surprise that people like me move here and never leave. I know the area well, having lived and explored all around over the past 21 years, and I am excited to help others live here and explore it too.

Secondly, from driving admissions at TEA for more than a decade, I really enjoy the sales and marketing sides of a business. I like delivering excellent customer service, staying current with industry trends, engaging clients through great branding and marketing and closing deals that are beneficial to all those involved. When I completed my first real estate transaction this winter, I was thrilled for the family, and the result of the work affirmed my motivation to do more.

Finally, as a former competitive athlete, I value the strength of a good team. Last summer, I was so fortunate to become part of the talented, full service team at Carr Long Real Estate, which consists of seasoned pros, great marketing, operations, staging and design folks and expert leadership – all dedicated to excellence for our clients in California. I have also joined Coldwell Banker Select, a team with a matching ethos and track record, to serve clients in Incline Village, Reno and Northern Nevada.

Seeking out and embracing new adventures in life is the core tenet of the school I co-founded; it is what we want our students to be able to do, even if embracing new challenges may be a little risky and scary. This is precisely why moving from education to real estate – another industry I really like – makes sense for me. As I dive fully into this line of work, I would be grateful if you would keep me in mind. Your business and referrals would go a long way to helping me gain solid footing on this new career path.
